One of the most misunderstood parts of VA disability claims is the VA combined rating calculator. Veterans often assume ratings are added like normal math—but the VA doesn’t work that way.
If you’ve ever wondered why 50% + 30% ≠ 80%, this post is for you.
The VA uses a “whole person” theory. Instead of adding percentages, the VA assumes you start as 100% healthy and subtracts disability in stages.
Each new rating is applied to what remains of the “un-disabled” portion of the body—not the original 100%.
That’s why it feels like the VA is playing games with the math.
They are—but it’s legal math.
Let’s walk through a simple example.
Start with 100%
First rating: 50% disability
Remaining ability = 50%
Second rating: 30% of the remaining 50%
30% of 50 = 15%
Total disability = 50 + 15 = 65%
VA rounds to the nearest 10 → 70%
✅ Final combined rating: 70%
The VA always starts with the highest rating first, then applies lower ratings in descending order.
Example:
50%
20%
10%
The VA combines them one at a time, recalculating the remaining “healthy” portion each step.
This is why multiple small ratings still matter—they compound over time.
Here’s what veterans often expect:
“I have five 10% ratings—that should be 50%.”
Here’s what the VA sees:
First 10% → 90% remains
Second 10% → 9% added
Third → 8.1%
Fourth → 7.29%
Fifth → 6.56%
Total ≈ 41% → rounds to 40%
That’s not a mistake. That’s the VA calculator doing exactly what it’s designed to do.
This is where strategy matters.
Secondary conditions:
Add additional ratings
Increase the compounded percentage
Can push a veteran over a critical threshold (50%, 70%, 90%)
Crossing certain rating levels unlocks:
Higher monthly compensation
Additional dependents pay
Eligibility for TDIU consideration
Stronger long-term benefit protection
📌 Every service-connected condition counts—especially when properly linked.
The VA doesn’t care how many symptoms you have—only what is service connected.
A strong medical nexus letter:
Establishes direct or secondary service connection
Prevents improper VA denials
Adds legitimate ratings into the combined calculation
Strengthens claims during Higher-Level Review or Appeals
Without a nexus, the condition doesn’t exist to the calculator.
Veterans often:
Assume ratings stack normally
Overlook secondary conditions
Fail to document symptom severity
Don’t understand how close they are to the next rating tier
Miss opportunities to cross key thresholds (e.g., 68% → 70%)
This is where informed planning makes a measurable difference.
At Nexus Veteran Consultants, we help veterans:
Understand how VA ratings actually work
Identify overlooked secondary conditions
Provide VA-compliant medical nexus opinions
Strengthen documentation to support higher ratings
Build claims with the whole person model in mind
We don’t inflate claims—we support legitimate ones with evidence.
The VA combined rating calculator isn’t random—it’s strategic.
When you understand how it works, you stop leaving benefits on the table.
The math matters.
The medical evidence matters.
And the nexus is what makes the math possible.
