How the VA Actually Rates Low Back Pain (And What They Don’t Tell You)

Primary Keywords: 38 CFR low back rating, VA lumbar spine rating criteria

VA Rating Breakdown (Simplified):

  • 10% – Limited motion with pain

  • 20% – Forward flexion ≤60° or muscle spasm affecting gait

  • 40% – Forward flexion ≤30°

  • 50–100% – Unfavorable ankylosis

Important But Overlooked Factors:

  • Pain during flare-ups

  • Repetitive use over time

  • Functional loss (sitting, standing, lifting)

  • Missed work or duty limitations

NVC Insight:
Most C&P exams do not adequately document flare-ups—a major reason veterans are underrated.
